Canon Printer: Steps To Resolve 'Ink System Failure' Issues

An ink system failure is generally caused because of low or empty ink cartridges or using used ink cartridges or it can also be caused because of printhead getting damaged. Steps to Resolve Ink System Failure in Canon Printer
1.) Always Use Authentic Canon Ink Cartridges
Canon always recommends its customers to use authentic Canon ink or toner supplies. It does not give assurance of the quality and reliability for using non-hp or refilled ink cartridges. If you are using non-authentic or refilled cartridges, you first need to replace them with genuine parts and then proceed with the below-mentioned steps.

2.) Reset the Canon Printer
 In certain cases, restarting the printer can resolve the Ink system failure issue.
•         Switch ON your printer, if your Canon printer is not on already.
•         Wait until your printer becomes idle and silent.
•         Now, with your printer activated, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
•         Next, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet as well.
•         Wait for a minute at least before plugging the power cord back into the wall outlet.
•         Reconnect the power cable back to the printer.
•         Now, turn ON the printer, in case it does not start automatically.
•         Wait until the printer goes through the warm-up period, flashing lights and carriage stops moving.

As the Ink System Failure error can also be caused due to low or empty ink cartridges, replacing them might resolve the problem. So, it is recommended to check the control panel of your printer for estimated ink levels.  However, if your printer doesn’t display the level of ink on the printer’s control panel, you can verify it by following these steps.
•         Search Windows for your printer model and then select the printer from the result’s list.


•         Click on Settings and then on Printer Toolbox.
•         Select the option Estimated Ink Levels.
•         Check and replace any low or empty ink cartridges accordingly.


4.) Clean Vents and Contacts of the Ink Cartridge
Cleaning the vents and contacts of the ink cartridge can also help clear the ink system failure error in Canon printers.
•         Switch ON the printer and open the ink cartridges access door.
•         Remove the ink cartridges from the machine and place them on a clean cloth or paper with ink opening pointing upward.
•         Check the vent part on the top of the ink cartridge and clean it using fresh, lint-free, dampened, cloth if you notice dirt or debris on it.


•         After cleaning, replace the cartridge back to their slots carefully.
•         Close the access door of ink cartridges
5.) Clean Printhead
If the problem persists, you may need to check and clean the printhead as well.
•         Open the ink cartridge access door and remove the cartridges from their respective slots.
•         Place them on a piece of paper or cloth with ink opening pointing upwards.
•         Then remove the printhead from the ink carriage and examine it to see for any dirt of debris preventing it from functioning properly.
•         Use a fresh, lint-free, lightly dampened cloth to clean the parts of the printhead.

•         Reinstall all the parts back to their position after cleaning. The problem should be fixed now.
